Leomer and Erika Joyce Lagradilla headed to the Maldives for their honeymoon and left the country on January 9 after they tied the knot on December 18, 2018.

According to DFA, the victims from Laguna were reportedly snorkeling before the incident happened.

"Both were rescued by resort workers but were pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital."

"Authorities were reported to be investigating the incident," DFA spokesperson Elmer Cato wrote in a statement.

Raajjee Television reported the news on Sunday that the 29-year-old wife and her 30-year-old husband were staying in Dhiffushi island.

"The DFA expresses its sympathies to the families of a Filipino couple who drowned on Sunday while on their honeymoon in the Maldives."

The DFA also stated that they are keeping in touch with the couple's next of kin and has assured assistance in the repatriation of their remains.
