Arnaiz shouted ‘Susuko na ako!’ before he was shot dead by two rookie cops - witness

Nineteen-year-old Carl Angelo Arnaiz, who was allegedly shot dead by two rookie cops, shouted "Susuko na ako!" and raised his hands before he was killed, a witness said.

A man who identified himself as "Joe Daniel" and who claims to be a witness to Arnaiz's killing testified at the Navotas Regional Trial Court (RTC) on Friday, October 19.

Arnaiz, a former University of the Philippines-Diliman (UPD) student, went missing after leaving his house at Cainta, Rizal on August 17, 2017 to buy snacks and was found dead in a Caloocan morgue 10 days later.

A police report said Arnaiz was killed in a police encounter after he allegedly tried to rob a taxi driver along C3 Road and was found in the possession of illegal drugs.

During the hearing, Daniel positively identified Police Officer (PO) 1 Jeffrey Perez and PO1 Ricky Arquilita as the ones who killed Arnaiz.

Daniel narrated that he came from a birthday party and was wandering around C3 Road in the early hours of August 18, 2017 to look for somewhere to eat.

He then saw a police car along the road. The witness said Arquilita alighted from the vehicle first and looked around before Perez got out of the car.

Then, a tall and young man – who the witness later identified as Arnaiz – alighted the police car. Daniel noted that Arnaiz was handcuffed.

Daniel said Arnaiz looked at his direction before he was tapped by one of the lawmen. Arnaiz then ran towards a grassy area and shouted "Susuko na ako!" with his hands raised.

The witness said he heard seven shots in total. Perez shot Arnaiz two times, followed by Arquilita, who shot the victim once.

Arnaiz fell and remained sprawled on the ground afterwards, the witness narrated.

Then, Arquilita went back to the police car and came back wearing white gloves, Daniel said. The policeman removed the victim's handcuffs and placed a small black thing in his hands.

Four shots followed – the last two louder than the first.

Daniel was able to flee from the incident and planned to remain silent about what he saw.

But his conscience became restless, and soon he sought help from lawyers and a senator to give his statement.

The witness will be cross-examined in the next hearing, which is scheduled on November 9. (Minka Klaudia Tiangco)
