3 tectonic earthquakes jolt Siargao Island

BUTUAN CITY – Three mild earthquakes jolted Pacific Ocean facing island of Siargao, in Surigao del Norte province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 3.6 magnitude earthquake was registered at 11:44 p.m. on Monday.

The epicenter was plotted 65 kilometers (km) northeast of Burgos town, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte province.

The tremor had a shallow depth of only 1 km., the state agency said.

Earlier, at 6:13 p.m. Monday, a 2.7 magnitude tremor was also recorded and its epicenter was located at 30 km. northeast of that same town and island, with a shallow depth of only 1 km, Phivolcs said.

A magnitude 2.3 earthquake was also registered at 6:11 p.m. Monday and its epicenter was traced 64 km northeast of that same town and island, again with a shallow depth of only 1 km, the state agency said.

The three tremors were tectonic in origin, Phivolcs said.

No tsunami alert was raised by the state agency.
