Rape cases drop in MIMAROPA

A police-initiated infomercial on local television stations against violence against women and children has helped reduce rape cases in Oriental Mindoro and nearby provinces by 24 percent in the first seven months of this year.

Senior Supt. Christopher Birung, director of the Oriental Mindoro Police Provincial Office (PPO), said police cooperation with religious groups and other non-government organizations (NGOs) also contributed not only in running after rapists but also in preventing the crime.

Birung said Oriental Mindoro has registered the biggest drop in the number of rape cases — from 67 in the first seven months of 2017 to 45 from January to July this year or a 32.84-percent decrease.

At the regional level, there was a decrease of 24 percent – from 198 cases to 150 cases in the same period from last year’s. (Aaron B. Recuenco)
