Tagbilaran City – The Bohol provincial board member accused of killing his wife has resigned.

In a letter released to the media on Thursday, Niño Rey Boniel turned in his resignation as the board member representing the province’s second district.

Vice Gov. Dionisio Balite received Boniel’s resignation on June 7 and led the board on Thursday in declaring the position vacant.

Boniel has been jailed on parricide charges after being accused of killing his wife, Bien Unido town mayor Gisela Bendong-Boniel, in June last year. He has denied the charges.

He said he decided to resign after consulting his family and supporters.

“My tenure maybe short but I have so many to be grateful for especially the assistance of my SP (Sangguniang Panglalawigan) family in my capacity as a public official,” Boniel said in his letter.
