WWE superstar John Cena and former Divas champion Nikki Bella have called off their engagement after spending six years together.

"While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another," they said in a statement to Us Weekly's Emily Longeretta. "We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives."

Cena proposed to Bella at WrestleMania 33 in April 2017 on live TV after their mixed tag-team match. The couple teamed-up to beat real-life couple The Miz and Maryse, concluding a storyline in which the antagonists had questioned Cena's long-term commitment to Bella:

In a trailer for the latest season of the reality show Total Bellas released in January, Cena and Bella's relationship status was used as the cliffhanger, with Bella asking Cena, "So we really want to call this off?"

The couple’s destination wedding was originally scheduled for May 5 but they announced that they would change the date due to their schedules, prior to the break-up.
