A promising future for infant formula milk

Studies show that breastfeeding remains to be the golden standard in infant nutrition, especially since scientists have found that it contains prebiotics and probiotics that help culture healthy bacteria in the body. But for most of us, breastfeeding is no easy task, and some moms struggle with finding alternative formulas that are at par with the nutritional value of breast milk. Good thing a recent study conducted by Dr. Eduardo Lopez-Huertas and his team at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research, has been innovating infant formulas to address this struggle.

After discovering that breast milk has several types of healthy bacteria, Dr. Lopez-Huertas’ team focused on enhancing infant formulas making them a healthier alternative for mothers who can’t breastfeed their children. They applied their findings to create a symbiotic follow-on GOLF (Galactooligosacchrides and prebiotic Lactobacillus fermentum Formula) and clinically tested its effects. The trial revealed several benefits, such as an evident increase in levels of good bacteria (lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) in the intestines and decreased gastrointestinal infections by 46% and respiratory infections by 26%.

For us moms, having a healthy substitute can be a lifesaver, considering our busy schedules. The study also showed that this will be especially helpful for moms who delivered their children via C-section who cannot breastfeed immediately. Although the symbiotic follow-on formula still requires further testing and analysis prior to being introduced to globally, these findings are very promising.
