6 Ecija cops, 2 civilians busted for checkpoint extortion

Carranglan, Nueva Ecija – The six police officers arrested the other night for extorting money from motorists while manning a checkpoint here will be summarily dismissed from service while traders victimized by the erring lawmen expressed relief.

No less than Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa stressed thathe will seek the dismissal from service of the six arrested officers to serve as a stern warning to other members of the police force.

Police Regional Office 3 Regional Director Chief Supt. Amador V. Corpus, also ordered the immediate relief and removal from post of six  members of the Carranglan Municipal Police Station after allegedly being involved in extortion activities.

The arrest of the six police officers and two civilians came after the PNP Counter-Intelligence Task Force personnel conducted entrapment operation at Digdig, Carranglan PNP checkpoint in Nueva Ecija against said PNP personnel after reports reached the Office of the PNP chief regarding the extortion activities.

Arrested were SPO1 Antonito Otic, PO3 Danilo Sotelo, PO3 Ronald Buncad, PO3 Oliver Antonio, PO2 Rodrigo Edralin and PO2 Romeo Nuñez III.

Also arrested are two civilian individuals who acted as collectors and are visible manning the checkpoint, identified as Ramon Cabilangan and Darwin Lagisma.

Confiscated from the arrested suspects were cash in different denominations while their issued firearms were properly turned-over to their superior.

Reports received by  Corpus said the suspects usually  flag down vehicles of traders coming from Cagayan Valley and cite them for fabricated offenses and violations, which are withdrawn if the vuictims opt  for a settlement.

The arrested individuals are now under the custody of CITF personnel and will be brought to the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame for documentation and filing of charges.

“We did not fall short in our warnings and memo directives reminding all PNP personnel to never engage in illegal activities. We will continue to weed out hoodlums and punish the undisciplined among our ranks through the strict application of the punitive sanctions for violations of PNP rules and regulations, and intensified counter-intelligence effort against unscrupulous activities of PNP personnel,” Corpus said.
