Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa said he expects improvement in police performance after President Rodrigo Duterte approved an increase in the salaries of policemen and the military effective this month.

In an interview during the turnover of new mobile police units and K9 dogs in Valenzuela City, Dela Rosa said police officers should double their efforts, particularly the PO1s who would enjoy a 100-percent increase on their monthly base pay.

“Magpatrol sila nang husto. Mag-aresto sila hindi yung patulog-tulog, patext-text. Dapat aggressive approach (They should patrol well. They should arrest criminals and not sleep or text while on duty. Aggressive approach is needed),” dela Rosa explained.

The PNP chief promised that faster dismissal will be given to policemen who would be caught getting into trouble or wrongdoings.

“Mas mabilis na pagresolba ng kanilang kaso, mas mabilis silang madismiss, promise ko yan sa inyo, lalo na yung mga PO1, times two na ‘yung sweldo nila, dapat hindi sila gumawa ng kalokohan, pang-aabuso,” dela Rosa said.

Oplan Tokhang is back

Dela Rosa said the PNP will relaunch its “Oplan Tokhang” this month, saying he already gave the “go signal” to police commanders on Monday.

Last year, the PNP’s war on drugs drew controversy following the deaths of teenagers at the hands of the policemen.

“The “true spirit” of Oplan Tokhang, which is to “knock and plead” for the drug suspects to surrender, will be observed in its relaunch,” dela Rosa said.

Asked whether the campaign will be less bloody this time, the PNP chief said: “Bloodless naman talaga ang concept ng Oplan Tokhang. Ang ibig sabihin niyan ay to knock and plead, hindi patayan.”
