Yokohama City, Japan — Japan may be a strong ally of the United States, but it has refused to move an inch to meddle and try to repair America’s strained relations with the Philippines.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not mediate to resolve the conflict between the Philippines and the United States because he understood the situation, President Duterte said on Thursday.

The President said he told Abe about his grudge against the United States, particularly its unfair treatment of the country, during their four-hour conversation last Wednesday.

“I told him my sentiment. Para kasi tayong ginagawa tayo na aso na you throw the bread far away everytime you have an issue with me. Tapos the favorite catchword is, ‘We will stop the aid and assistance,’” Duterte said in an interview with reporters during his visit to the Japan Coast Guard regional headquarters in Yokohama.

Asked if Abe tried to mediate between the two conflicting allies, Duterte said: “No. He understands. Meron nga silang problema dito sa narcotics, everywhere.”

“To his internal credit, Minister Abe is a very courteous man,” the President added.
