DA gears up for Mawar’s possible impact on agri

The Department of Agriculture (DA) said it is preparing for the possible effects of Super Typhoon “Mawar” on the agriculture sector once it enters the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR). In a statement released on Thursday, May 25, the agriculture department said it has advised farmers to harvest matured crops and use post-harvest facilities. Farmers were also told to secure seed reserves, planting materials, and other farm inputs. Moreover, the DA instructed them to relocate farm machineries, and equipment to higher ground, and clear drainage in irrigation and rice paddies from obstructions to prevent flooding. The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has told the local government veterinary services, agriculturist, and Disaster  Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) officer to ensure that space for livestock and other domestic animals of Internally Displace Persons (DPs), saying that they should be identified and provided in camps or if possible a separate camp facility for the animals shall be established. “Facilities, food and water for these animals shall also be provided by the LGU during the disasters until such time when they are able to return to their owner’s residences,” it said. The BAI said care and safety of animals should be provided with the assistance of the DA, Animal Rescue Organizations and other concerned stakeholders. Meantime, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) advised fisherfolk to ensure fishing boats, gears, paraphernalia, and other machineries are positioned in a safe place. Fisher told were also told to halt fishing activities until the weather condition improves, and secure fish cage, ponds, and stocks.
