“As we prepare to send you off to the upcoming barangay elections, let us not forget the importance of the role you play in our society. You are not merely educators; you are also community leaders. You possess a unique perspective and understanding of the needs and aspirations of our barangays,” she said in her speech.

“Through your interactions with students and their families, you gain insight into the challenges faced by our communities and the opportunities for growth and development. Remember, you are not just educators; you are leaders and agents of change,” Duterte stressed.

The Vice President spoke at the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Butuan City, where she recognized the importance role of teachers in shaping the minds of the youth.

“You play a vital role in shaping not only the minds of our youth but also in molding the future of our nation. You are the guiding lights that illuminate the path to knowledge, understanding, and personal growth. You are the architects of our dreams, helping us to build a solid foundation for a successful and fulfilling life,” she said at the event also attended by Senator and presidential sister Imee Marcos.

The official also urged teachers to be “MATATAG,” or resilient, in the face of adversities.

MATATAG also refers to the Department of Education’s (DepEd) new agenda to resolve basic education woes.

“When you stand tall in the face of difficulties, you become a beacon of strength for your students. Your unyielding commitment to their education and well-being creates an environment of stability and encouragement, allowing them to thrive academically and personally,” she said.

Duterte, who serves as Education chief in a concurrent capacity, also promised to support and uplift the lives of teachers.

“We continue to advocate for better resources, improved working conditions, and enhanced professional development opportunities,” she said.

On Thursday, Duterte announced public school teachers and DepEd personnel have now active Personal Accident Insurance policy with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).

The insurance has a coverage of up to P100,000 for accidental death or dismemberment and up to P30,000 per year for medical reimbursement due to injuries sustained in accidents.
