Comelec says low voter turnout a perennial problem overseas

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) cited the low voter turnout as a perennial problem in overseas voting.

"Since the start of overseas voting, that has been our perennial problem, the low voter turnout," Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said in a virtual forum.

This, he said, is the reason why they are pushing for internet voting.

"We are pushing for it because we believe internet voting will allow us to have an increase in voter turnout," said Jimenez.

"One of the biggest problems in having low turnout is the difficulty of voting. People find it difficult to go to embassy or consulate becuase they don't live near the embassy or consulate," he added.

The Comelec is already finalizing their report to Congress regarding the internet voting system.

"Hopefully, we can submit our recommendation so that, in the future elections, Congress can consider allowing internet voting. It will be a big help if we can have internet voting," Jimenez said.

The Comelec conducted a series test runs for overseas internet voting last year.
