PPA’s inaction to rid Dalahican Port of garbage left by ‘Paeng’ assailed

DALAHICAN PORT, Lucena City -- An owner of a commercial passenger vessel Roll On and Roll off (RoRo) ship bound for Marinduque expressed disappointment over what she described as a non-action of the Philippine Ports Authority here to rid the port of large volume of garbage left by Typhoon Paeng.

The debris apparently prevented the vessel from loading the hundreds of passengers on time.

Star Horse Shipping Lines general manager Merian Reyes said that ridding the port of debris is a responsibility of the PPA which she said could not do anything to clear the tons of garbage and debris that affected the ship's engine.

She added that files of garbage got stuck on the cooling system, particularly the M/V Virgen de Peñafrancia X.

She pointed out that this is a PPA responsibility under the port manager Elegio Fortajada.

"As a ship owner and operator, we are doing our part in serving the commuting public and the PPA should do its share," Reyes stressed.

Addressing the problem, Reyes sought the assistance of Lucena City Mayor Mark Alcala for sending a backhoe and a dump truck from the City Engineering Office to haul the said garbage.
