MB Daily News Update: NUPL prods SC to address Badoy threats vs Manila judge

Even more lawyers are breathing down Lorraine Marie Badoy's neck.

The Supreme Court (SC) has been asked by the 485-strong National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) to look into the former National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) spokesperson's threats against Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Marlo Magdoza-Malagar.

Malagar earned Badoy's ire after the former handed down a decision saying that the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the New People’s Army (NPA) are not terrorist organizations.

"We also hope that the Court will address Ms. Badoy’s attacks against human rights lawyers which were part of her attacks against Judge Malagar," the NUPL said in its letter to the SC headed by Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo.

In a now-deleted social media post, the outspoken Badoy said of Malagar: “So, if I kill this judge and I do so out of my political belief that all allies of the CPP NPA NDF (National Democratic Front) must be killed because there is no difference in my mind between a member of the CPP NPA NDF and their friends, then please be lenient with me."

The NUPL is a group of human rights lawyers.

Elsewhere, in Europe, Russian President Vladimir Putin led the country's celebration after it annexed four territories in neighboring Ukraine, which the Kremlin has been at war with for the past seven months.

In the backdrop of this annexation was the bloody shelling of Ukraine’s southern region of Zaporizhzhia, where a reported 25 civilians were killed.

“I want to say this to the Kyiv regime and its masters in the West: People living in Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia are becoming our citizens forever,” Putin said during a ceremony.

Washington said it would “never” recognize Russia’s authority in the regions.
