Over 11,00 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were recorded in Metro Manila on Thursday, Jan. 6, setting a new record for the number of infections in a day, the independent research group OCTA said Friday, Jan. 7.
"The steep increase in new COVID-19 cases in the NCR continues as the region reported 11,630 new cases on Jan. 6, 2022, breaking the previous record of 9,030 new cases on Sept. 11, 2021," OCTA Research Fellow Dr. Guido David said in a tweet.
David also noted that Metro Manila's single-day positivity rate has increased to 46.3 percent while the seven-day average increased to 38 percent--considered to be at a "critical" level.
Moreover, the incidence or average daily attack rate increased to 34 per day per 100,000 population, which is also considered critical by OCTA.
Due to the high number of infections, David said that Metro Manila's reproduction number is now at 5.69, which means that a COVID-positive individual infects around five persons.
"With so many cases, projections now carry a considerate margin of error," David said.
He projected that Metro Manila may record between 11,000 and 13,000 COVID-19 cases and between 17,000 and 19,000 cases in the entire country on Friday.
David advised the public to be mindful of the minimum public health standards and to always stay safe.
