More than 200 passengers left stranded in Cebu due to TD ‘Lanie’

CEBU CITY – More than 200 passengers were stranded in various ports in Cebu after storm signal No. 1 was hoisted over the province due to tropical depression "Lanie" on Monday, October 4.

According to the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA), most of the stranded passengers were from Olango Island who were supposed to cross to mainland Lapu-Lapu City.

The CPA also listed at least 68 passengers who were stranded in the towns of Sta. Fe and San Remigio in northern Cebu.

Starting at 5 a.m. Monday, at least 65 sea trips were cancelled after the Philippine Coast Guard Station Central Cebu did not allow vessels to sail due to the inclement weather.

The non-stop rains also caused minor landslides in various areas in Cebu City.

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CCDRRMO) said landslides were reported in Barangay Pulangbato and Sinsin.

A parked vehicle nearly fell into the river after a riprap in Barangay Buhisan caved in, said Ramil Ayuman, chief of CDRRMO.

The City Engineering Department has already sent personnel to check on the landslide-hit areas, Ayuman said.

Ayuman said those living in landslide-prone areas have been advised to take precautions especially during non-stop rains.
