Make the new year, a new year

"The only way to live is by accepting each minute as an unrepeatable miracle." — Tara Brach

I saw this quote on Twitter last week. Immediately it struck me as a perfect reminder for everyone who was looking forward to 2020, with brand-new goals, aspirations, and (oft-broken) resolutions.

It seems almost everyone has a new year’s resolution, but somehow, many don’t get to follow-through with their resolutions.  In some cases, it’s not of their own doing but due to external forces and circumstances beyond their control.

When that happens, many choose to abandon their plans, resolutions, and aspirations.  They usually resolve to do it again next year instead.  To start fresh in January, effectively throwing away the rest of the year.

But that quote is a reminder that every minute is a new opportunity to do something or re-start something which you might have previously abandoned.  EVERY minute, and EVERY DAY is a gift to ALL of us, to do what we previously set out to do.

And this doesn’t have to be huge projects or endeavors.  No, definitely not.  It can be even the simplest thing like fixing the light bulb, which you might have been procrastinating on.  I know… changing a light bulb doesn’t seem to be life-changing, but it’s one less thing on your mind, which could help you focus on the more important things to do. I remember just last week.  There was a defective lightbulb which I wasn’t able to replace for some time.  It seemed like a small inconvenience, but after I replaced the bulb, I felt that I could focus on other things, instead of constantly having that defective light bulb on my mind.

Planning to take a vacation to decompress?  Do it on a long weekend in 2020 instead of waiting for 2021 (just make sure you’re within your budget).  Want to read that new book which just came out, but plan to do it during your vacation?  Try reading one chapter a day, during your break, or before going to bed.  Before you know it, you’ll be done, and looking for a new book to read.

Every minute is an opportunity for us to do something we plan to do.  Every day is a fresh start for us to dive into something we’ve been planning to do.  No matter how important or insignificant the activity, errand, job, task may be.  Because, unlike money, once that minute, hour, or day is gone, you can never get it back.  You lose it.. FOREVER.

So, for 2020 I won’t have any grandiose resolutions.  I’ll just resolve to make every minute, hour, and day count.

Happy New Year!
