Aug. 19 is special non-working day in Angono

Workers in Angono will have a rest day on Wednesday (Aug. 19) after Malacañan Palace declared it a special non-working day in celebration of the town’s independence from the municipality of Binangonan.

Mayor Jeri Mae Calderon announced on the municipal government's  Facebook page that Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, by the authority of President Duterte, signed Proclamation No. 996 declaring a special non-working day in the entire municipality on Aug. 19.

The town was first created as a pueblo in 1766 before becoming a barrio of Binangonan.

On Aug. 19, 1938, Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon signed Executive Order No. 158 making the town a separate municipality.

Quezon’s order became effective on Jan. 1, 1939, with Bagong Bayan, Poblacion, San Isidro, San Roque, and San Vicente as the town's first original barangays.

The present Angono now has ten barangays, namely San Isidro, Mahabang Parang, Kalayaan, San Roque, San Vicente, Poblacion Ibaba, San Pedro, Bagumbayan, Sto. Niño, and Poblacion Itaas.

The town, dubbed the "art capital" of the country, is home to 500 visual artists, based on the International Labor Organization. The town is also proud to have two national artist "sons," namely Carlos "Botong" Francisco (visual arts) and Lucio D. San Pedro (music).
