The Church People-Workers Solidarity (CWS) on Tuesday mourned the passing of peace advocate and peasant rights defender Randall "Randy" Echanis deeming his killing a blow to the Filipino people's aspiration for just and lasting peace.

In a statement, the group noted how Echanis "selflessly devoted most of his life in the service of the peasantry, farm workers and the people."

They noted that as peace consultant, "Ka Randy worked tirelessly to advance socio-economic reforms particularly on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development. He was resolute in bringing on the negotiating table free land distribution for landless peasants."

As national chairperson of Anakpawis Partylist, CWS said Echanis also contributed in drafting pro-poor legislations and resolutions, specifically the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill (GARB).

The group said Echanis lived a life of genuine service to the poor and oppressed.

"His life of dedication and commitment to the poor will forever leave an indelible mark on the millions of peasants and farm workers as they continue to struggle for land and life," said CWS.

"His lifelong commitment to the oppressed and exploited sector is a sign of hope that the poor have not resigned themselves to suffering, injustice and plundering," the group added.

CWS condemned the heartless and brutal killing of Echanis and all victims of State persecution.

"The killing never stops, even in the midst of a pandemic," the group said. "Indeed, the Anti-Terror Law has given State forces unlimited power to target and silence political dissenters."

Although Echanis is gone, the group expressed hope that his life will inspire people to "live a life of commitment and dedication to the poor."

Echanis was killed in his Quezon City home Monday, August 10.
