By Minka Klaudia Tiangco  Indigent families in Navotas City can now avail of a complete line of cremation services for free as part of the city government's “Libreng Libing (Free Burial)” program. (NAVOTAS PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE / MANILA BULLETIN) (NAVOTAS PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE / MANILA BULLETIN) Beneficiaries of the Libreng Libing program will receive free urns, and will be granted access to the NavoHimalayan chapels, crematorium, and columbarium vaults. They will also be given the option to bring home the urns containing the ashes of their departed loved ones. Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco said that not only will the program lessen the financial burden of poor families in the city, it will also address the lack of burial space at Navotas' public cemeteries. “Funeral expenses can deplete an indigent family’s resources and force them to borrow money from friends or loan facilities. Through the libreng libing program, we hope to provide the poor a proper and dignified eternal rest,” he said in a statement. Those who wish to avail of the free cremation services for their deceased loved ones must submit the death certificate of the deceased, certificate of indigency from their barangay and City Social Welfare and Development Office, and proof that either the deceased or their parents or heirs are registered voters in Navotas.
