Magnitude 5.8 quake jolts Leyte

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 5.8-magnitude quake that struck Leyte province on Friday evening, May 3.

Based on Phivolcs’ data, the earthquake struck at 6:16 p.m., with an epicenter 36 kilometers northeast of Abuyog, Leyte.

Phivolcs initially reported the quake at magnitude 6.

The tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Abuyog, Burauen, Dulag, La Paz, Macarthur, Mahaplag, Tabontabon, and Tolosa in Leyte; and Hinunangan, Hinundayan, and Silago in Southern Leyte.

It was also felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Jagna, Bohol; Balangiga, City of Borongan, General Macarthur, Giporlos, Hernani, Lawaan, Llorente, and Quinapondan in Eastern Samar; Barugo, City of Baybay, Calubian, Dagami, Hilongos, Jaro, Javier, Julita, 
Kananga, Palo, Pastrana, San Miguel, and Santa Fe in Leyte; Ormoc City; Tacloban City; Basey, Samar; and Bontoc, Malitbog, and Sogod in Southern Leyte.

Meanwhile, it was “weak” at Intensity III in Tagbilaran City, Bohol and Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, and “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Bogo City Cebu and Pintuyan, Southern Leyte.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity VI (very strong) in Dulag and Abuyog in Leyte; Intensity V in Mahaplag, and Burauen in Leyte and Hinunangan and Hinundayan in Southern Leyte; Intensity IV in Palo, Hilongos, Javier, and Alangalang in Leyte; Sogod, Southern Leyte; Basey, Samar; and Quinapondan Eastern Samar.

It was also registered at Intensity III in Calubian, Carigara, and Albuera in Leyte; Talibon, Bohol; Can-Avid, Eastern Samar; Cebu City; City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte; San Juan, Southern Leyte; and Marabut, Samar; Intensity II in Isabel, Villaba, and Kananga in Leyte; Danao, City of Bogo, Carcar, and Argao in Cebu; and Villareal, Samar; and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in San Fernando, Cebu; Bulusan, Sorsogon; Mapanas, Northern Samar; Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte; City of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte; and Kawayan, Biliran.

Phivolcs said the quake’s magnitude does not warrant the issuance of “tsunami information,” but warned of potential aftershocks.
