Heat index in 25 areas hits ‘danger’ category on May 3

Twenty-five areas experienced a heat index that fell into the "danger" category on Friday, May 3, based on the data of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Dagupan City, Pangasinan recorded the highest heat index of the day, at 47 degrees Celsius (°C), followed by Aparri, Cagayan, at 46°C.

The following areas also recorded a dangerously high heat index on Friday: Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (45°C); Cuyo, Palawan (45°C); Bacnotan, La Union (44°C); Virac, Catanduanes (44°C); Pili, Camarines Sur (44°C); Butuan City, Agusan del Norte (44°C); Iba, Zambales (43°C); Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (43°C); Aborlan, Palawan (43°C); Dumangas, Iloilo (43°C); Catarman, Northern Samar (43°C); Batac, Ilocos Norte (42°C); Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (42°C); Casiguran, Aurora (42°C); Cubi Pt., Subic Bay, Olongapo City (42°C); Ambulong, Tanauan, Batangas (42°C); Infanta, Quezon (42°C); San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (42°C); Masbate City, Masbate (42°C); La Granja, La Carlota, Negros Occidental (42°C); Borongan, Eastern Samar (42°C); Guiuan, Eastern Samar (42°C); and Cotabato City, Maguindanao (42°C).

The heat index measures how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with the actual air temperature.

PAGASA said heat indices ranging from 42°C to 51°C indicate “danger,” as "heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely," and "heat stroke is probable with continued activity."

Meanwhile, a heat index above 52°C indicates “extreme danger” as “heat stroke is imminent.”

Iba, Zambales recorded the highest heat index so far this year at 53°C on April 28.
