Drowning victim's body recovered on Cagayan River


ENRILE, Cagayan – Authorities have recovered the body of a 20-year-old man who drowned while gathering clams on the Cagayan River in Barangay Maddarulog Sur here on Saturday, April 13.

Police Capt. Precil Morales, deputy chief of police here, identified the victim as Merson Maggay Jr., a second-year criminology student. Maggay’s body was recovered at about 8:10 a.m. on Sunday, April 14.

Police said Maggay was gathering clams and shrimps with two companions when he suffered leg cramps.

Maggay’s companions tried to rescue him but he was taken away by the strong river current and drowned.

Authorities conducted a search and retrieval operation until he was recovered.

Police advised residents to take extra precaution while swimming and fishing on the Cagayan River.

Meanwhile, A 41-year-old construction drowned while swimming with co-workers during a picnic on the Paoay Lake in Barangay Nagbacalan, Paoay, Ilocos Norte on Sunday, April 14.

Police identified the victim as Jhonny B. Bagasol, a resident of Barangay Nagbacalan. Bagasol was recovered but was declared dead by the Rural Health Unit of Paoay.
