Woman killed, 2 injured in Cebu City fire

CEBU CITY – A 28-year-old woman was killed while two others were injured in a fire that hit a residential area here Thursday.

The charred remains of the victim, Maris Bayaton, a person with Down Syndrome, were found on the second floor of their house in Barangay Bulacao.

SFO1 Novo Erana of the Cebu City Fire Department said they received the alarm at 3:02 p.m. The fire spread to two other houses before it was controlled at 3:22 p.m.

Investigation showed that the victim was sleeping when the fire broke out. A butane canister that exploded was reportedly the cause of fire.

The victim’s mother Ernita and a 23-year-old man were reportedly injured during the incident. Property damage was pegged at P200,000.

The same day, a car caught fire on Colon St. while firefighters were responding to an alarm in a posh subdivision in Barangay Banilad where a garage was damaged.

The three fire incidents occurred a few days into the month, which is considered a Fire Prevention Month.

Activities were lined up last March 1 as part of the observance of the Fire Prevention month but were cancelled after some fire personnel were infected with COVID-19.
