The crew of a vessel, which caught fire off Shell Island in Cebu City, have been successfully rescued, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Monday.
The crew members of Super Shuttle 3, a vehicles carrier, were rescued after fire engulfed the vessel's engine room at 3:30 a.m.
PCG said it deployed BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406) to combat the fire while the vessel was towed to Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City, Cebu.
The firefighting team onboard BRP Suluan “penetrated the engine compartment of the vessel to stop the engine, conduct boundary cooling and combat the fire onboard,” the PCG said in a Facebook post.
The PCG said two injured crew members suffered first to second degree burns. They were evacuated from the vessel, and brought to a hospital in a PCG ambulance waiting in Pier 3 for medical assistance.
The team declared fire under control at around 4:30 a.m., and subsequently declared fire out at around 5:05 a.m.
The vessel was towed to the Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City at around 5:30 a.m.
