The Philippines and the United States have launched a new project that aims to strengthen veterinary services to ensure safe local pork and pork products.

A government-run dairy farm in Baguio City is expected to be a more reliable source of milk in the country as the Department of Agriculture (DA) is aiming to enter an agreement with its USA counterpart for the farm’s improvement.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) will increase monitoring of pork imports coming into the country to prevent the entry of new African Swine Fever (ASF) variants that have started to cause problems in the hog sector of China, the world’s largest pork-producing country.

The United States (US) is funding two separate agriculture projects in the Philippines with combined investment of P1.6 billion.

The Philippines and the United States (US) will continue to work together amid the pandemic in building new markets for their respective farmers via climate-smart production systems, the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture (DA) said.

The possibility of the government opening up the local market to more imported sugar remains to be one of the major factors why the country’s local sugar production is seen not improving this year or in the next years to come.  

The Philippines, one of the top pork importers in the world, is seen doubling its pork imports to 350,000 metric tons (MT) this year amid the Duterte Administration’s decision to temporarily cut the tariff rates for the commodity.

While the outlook for the Philippines’ sugar production for the current crop year is positive, it still wouldn’t be enough to satisfy the projected demand in the country, data from the US Development Authority (USDA) showed.  

Rich Filipinos were eating way less beef during the pandemic, resulting in significantly lower production nationwide, as the prolonged lockdowns forced restaurant to temporarily shutdown operations.

While the decline in the country’s pork production is already a given amid the persistence of African Swine Fever (ASF), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a surprising outlook on the Philippines’ chicken production, which it said might go down despite the assurance of the Philippine government that there will even be a surplus of this commodity by the end of the year.
