Gene-edited animals approved for food use for the first time
CRISPR is a tool that allows scientists to splice and edit the DNA of any organism. The applications of this technology are almost limitless. On March 7, 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved food products from two CRISPR-edited cattle and their offspring. The agency deemed that there was low risk in the marketing of such products and that the genomic alteration of these cattle raises no safety concerns.
