13 names of Typhoon Odette's confirmed casualties in Siargao released
DAVAO CITY – A total of 13 names out of the 19 reported casualties in Siargao island due to Typhoon Odette were confirmed on Wednesday, Dec. 22. In his Facebook post, Surigao del Norte First District Rep. Francisco Jose “Bingo” Matugas shared the list of confirmed casualties. The youngest of the casualties was a four-year old from Brgy. Mabuhay in Sta. Monica, while the oldest was 80 years old from Brgy. Rizal, also in Sta. Monica. “Masulob-on ako na ihatod sa ijo an masakit na balita na ini. An isa ka sensitibo na balita pareha ini, unta nagikan sa mismo hintungdan o derecho ra unta sa mismong mga pamilya (It is with great sadness and pain that we bring you this report. Sensitive information like this should have been communicated to immediate families alone),” Matugas said. “Pero kay sa limitasyon nan komunikasyon, kinahanglan ko ipahibayo ini sa ini ra na paagi (However, we have to publish this knowing that this is the only way to convey the message considering the limited means of communication),” he added.

Military responders to celebrate Christmas with typhoon survivors
DAVAO CITY – Like many of the responders, Cpl. Henry Baleña will celebrate Christmas with typhoon Odette survivors in Caraga region. Baleña, who belongs to the Philippine Navy, is one of over a hundred personnel who joined the newly-activated Joint Task Force Sambisig of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Eastern Mindanao Command that departed for the typhoon-hit areas to conduct relief and rehabilitation efforts. The task force is primarily composed of personnel from the Army, Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force, Medical Corps and Army Engineers. Aside from from the soldiers under the Eastern Mindanao Command, personnel from the Office of Civil Defense and Philippine Coast Guard also joined the contingent that departed for Surigao City on Wednesday morning. Baleña admitted that his hometown in Rosario, Agusan del Sur was also partially hit by the onslaught of the typhoon.
