Beat the heat: San Juan gov't adjusts class hours vs extreme heat

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora issued an executive order on Monday, March 3, adjusting class hours in the city's public schools in an effort to ensure its learners' health and safety against extreme heat.

Executive Order No. FMZ-193, Series of 2025 implements an adjusted class schedule for all public schools, including child development centers in the city. This measure will take effect starting March 4.

"Under the new schedule, morning classes will run from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., while afternoon classes will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This adjustment aims to minimize students’ exposure to the hottest hours of the day (10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. To ensure continuous learning, students will be given supplemental academic activities to complete at home during the remaining school hours," Zamora said.

"For private elementary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities in San Juan, the city government has left the decision to the respective school administrations. However, local officials strongly encourage these institutions to avoid holding in-person classes during peak heat hours for the safety and well-being of students," he added.

The mayor noted that this proactive approach reflects the city government's commitment to prioritizing student health and adapting to changing climate conditions.

"The local government will continue monitoring the situation and provide necessary support to educational institutions in implementing this policy effectively." the local chief executive stressed.
