Negros Island logs 53 fireworks-related injuries

BACOLOD CITY – The Negros Island Region logged 53 fireworks-related injuries as of Jan. 1.

The Department of Health-NIR said 31 of these cases recorded since Dec. 21 involved minors.

Thirty-six sustained burns or blast injuries, 15 sustained eye injuries, one had blast and eye injuries, and another suffered blast injury with amputation.

Negros Occidental had the highest number of cases with 31, followed by 11 in Negros Oriental, Bacolod City with nine, and two cases in Siquijor. 

The injuries were caused by fireworks such as sparklers, “boga” (improvised cannon), Five Star, piccolo, bilong-bilong, kamara, kwitis, triangle, flying tiger, candle bomb, Marawi, and whistle bomb, and six incidents with an unknown cause.
