Operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) seized more than P3.6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in a series of operations in Central Mindanao.

CIDG director Maj. Gen. Leo Francisco said the operations were part of the Oplan Megashopper which was launched after PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil ordered the police to assist the national government in running after smuggling activities.

The operations, he said, were carried out in Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, North Cotabato, South Cotabato and Koronadal City on Sept. 5.

“These coordinated operations resulted in the apprehension of several suspects and the confiscation of smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value exceeding PhP3.6 million, along with a vehicle valued at P833,000,” said Francisco.

The operations, he said, led to the arrest of seven people who were allegedly selling the smuggled cigarettes.

Francisco said charges relating to the Republic Act 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, were slapped against the arrested suspects and their alleged cohorts.

The confiscated items comprise various brands of cigarettes, on the other hand, were kept and will be used as evidence against them.

“The confiscated items are currently being processed for documentation and proper disposition. To ensure transparency and compliance with procedural standards, the operations were documented using Alternative Recording Devices (ARDs),” said Francisco.
