In a statement, the Vice President underscored the important role that ASEAN plays in bringing peace through unity.
“Ipagdiwang natin ang patuloy na pagsisikap ng ASEAN sa pagtaguyod ng kapayapaan, pagkakaunawaan, at pagkakaisa hindi lamang ng mga bansang kasapi kundi ng buong mundo (Let us celebrate the continued work of the ASEAN in promoting peace, understanding, and unity not only with member-countries but in the whole world),” she said.
“Hindi lamang ito nagbubukas ng mas maraming oportunidad para sa lahat, kundi nagbibigay rin ng pag-asa para sa mas matatag na buhay sa hinaharap (This doesn’t only open many opportunities for all, but it also gives hope for a better future),” the official added.
United States Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson also greeted the regional bloc on X (formerly Twitter).
“Happy #ASEAN Day! We at @USEmbPH are excited to embark on another year working closely with @ASEAN partners to achieve our shared goals for a more peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. #ASEANDay57,” she wrote, posting also emojis of the ASEAN member-states’ flags.
Canadian Ambassador to Manila David Hartman also sent his greetings with a post, “Happy #ASEAN day!”
Hartman reposted a message from the Canadian Embassy.
“Happy #ASEAN Day! As a Strategic Partner, Canada looks forward to working closely with ASEAN and our partners in fostering peace, prosperity, stability, and sustainable development in the region,” the embassy wrote.
In her message, Duterte also applauded the ASEAN for empowering the youth.
“Tandaan din natin na ang suporta natin sa mga kabataan sa ASEAN ay magbubukas sa daan para sa kanilang tagumpay at sa tagumpay ng ating mga adhikain bilang nagkakaisang rehiyon (Let us also remember that our support to the youth in ASEAN will open the way for their triumph and success of our advocacy as one region),” she added.
ASEAN Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the regional bloc. It is celebrated every Aug. 8, wherein member-countries gather to celebrate the establishment of ASEAN.
According to its website, ASEAN Day is when “member nations participate in various activities to promote regional solidarity and showcase ASEAN’s achievements and objectives.”
