Inaugural champ Bacoor, 8 other teams collide in MPVA

Inaugural champion Bacoor City along with eight other teams collide for supremacy when the Maharlika Pilipinas Volleyball Association (MPVA) Season 1 unfolds Sunday, Aug. 11, at the Strikers Gymnasium.

Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has the same values, which according to its founder Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao are playing significant and crucial roles particularly for the hidden gems in other regions.

“Ito ay hindi lang isang liga, ito [rin] ay isang plataporma na nagdadala ng pag-asa at pagkakataon sa mga talento sa grassroots volleyball sa Pilipinas,” said Pacquiao in MPVA's press conference at the Sheraton Manila Hotel in Pasay City Wednesday evening, Aug. 7.

“Ang pagkakaroon ng mas maraming koponan ay ‘di lang pagpapataas ng antas ng kompetisyon, kundi magbubukas din ng pintuan para sa maraming kabataang atleta na maipakita ang kanilang galing sa mas malaking entablado,” Pacquiao added. 

Commissioner Mike Tavera said it will be an even playing field this time.

"Nakita ko 'yong mga teams are very competitive and balanse, so I think it's a balanced competition this year," said Tavera.

With the addition of the newly formed Quezon Tangerines, MPVA will have a longer season as the nine squads plunge into a double-round preliminaries. 

The top two teams will earn a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinal while the final round is set for best-of-three where the challenge system will be utilized.

The MPVA also aims to promote local tourism as each crew will have their respective home courts.

In the maiden edition, the Strikers reigned supreme in sudden death, sweeping Negros, 28-26, 25-14, 25-23, in Game 3.

The Lady Blue Hawks settled for silver while the Marikina Lady Shoemasters took home the bronze.
