Japanese artist completes Panay Island walk

ILOILO CITY – A Japanese artist has completed his more than a month walkathon on Panay Island.

Tappei Noguchi completed his journey on July 4 when he arrived in Roxas City, the capital of Capiz province and where he started his walk on May 29.

“Many people paid attention to my journey. It was a little strange to be on the road with so many people waiting for me,” said Noguchi on his Facebook page.

The 32-year-old artist gained attention when he was pulling a tire as he traveled by foot for 650 kilometers.

His 36-day journey showcased the land and people of Panay Island, which comprises of the provinces of Capiz, Iloilo, Antique, and Aklan.

“I love this beautiful island and its daily life,” Noguchi said. “I saw the sea and fishermen at sunrise, the sunset over the vast sea and rice fields, mountain paths under a starry sky, palm trees swaying in the breeze, buffaloes bathing in the mud, dogs barking at me every step of the way, cats and chickens everywhere, children jumping into the river, a friendly-looking  family snuggled in a hammock under a tree and looking at the street, villages wrapped in the smoke of bonfires, grandmothers cracking coconuts, bus and tricycle drivers who call out to me as they pass by,” Noguchi said.

Despite the many warnings for his safety, Noguchi was grateful for the people’s hospitality and kindness.

“Although there were many warnings to be careful of drunken people at night, even the men drinking on the streets late at night welcomed me with open arms and we often drank many beers and rum together,” he said.

“Many families, barangay halls, and resort hotels provided me with a place to sleep wherever I went. Thanks to them, I was able to walk without getting tired,” he added.

As an artist, Noguchi sold prints of his work to those who were willing to buy. Noguchi also met several artists and even did collaborative works with them.

Meanwhile, Noguchi mounted an exhibition of memories from his walk across Panay Island in Roxas City from July 6 to 7.

This was not the first time Noguchi conducted a walkathon. He also held two in his native Japan as well as Taiwan.
