We’re just a few days away from Christmas!
Yuletide is one of my favorite times because it brings an air of happiness and a deeper reflection on the events that have shaped our year. December particularly holds a special place in my heart as it not only ushers in the peak of festivities across the Philippines but also marks my birthday.
The festive sparkle and cherished traditions heighten our appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. As homes twinkle with the glow of parols and streets resonate with jolly cheers, I find myself fully immersed in the nuances that make the holidays unforgettable.
What’s even more beautiful about the occasion is the profound expression of values we hold dear—the gift of giving, the spirit of solidarity, and the strength of our faith.
As we wrap gifts, we also encase our intentions with ribbons of compassion, extending help to those in need and standing together in unity. This celebration transcends the material, embodying a deeper generosity that binds us and highlighting how, through giving and faith, we receive the true gifts of Christmas: connection, community, and spiritual fulfillment.
This month, two significant experiences have deeply impacted me, embodying the spirit of giving and resilience that defines this advent time.
Last week, I had the privilege of being part of the latest Dugtong Buhay Movement by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). Spearheaded by DBM Secretary Amenah “Mina” F. Pangandaman, we were able to amass an impressive 300 bags of blood in the initiative at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).
This is thanks to the shared effort, bolstered by our partners from the University of the Philippines Manila, PGH, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine Red Cross, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, PS-DBM. GPPB, the Philippine National Police, and Coca-Cola Philippines.
Echoing Sec. Mina’s sentiment, we are immensely grateful to every participant and donor who contributed to this vital cause. Your support not only saves lives but also strengthens the bond of our community in service to humanity.
Among the many touching moments, I will never forget during our bloodletting activity was when Sec. Mina visited the Silahis ng Kalusugan School for the Chronically Ill at PGH. Seeing brave kids battle their illnesses with such courage nearly moved us all to tears. And just when the room felt heavy with emotion, who should pop in but Jollibee? His surprise appearance instantly brought smiles and laughter, lighting up the room with pure happiness—a dramatic shift.
It is in these moments that Sec. Mina’s kindness and compassion truly shine, demonstrating the profound impact of empathetic leadership. Her presence uplifts spirits and reinforces our commitment to serve and support the most vulnerable in our community. And, without her trying, she sets a powerful example for all of us to emulate.
The following day, I was at the Her Sisterhood Conference at Jesus the Gospel Church in Parañaque, addressing a remarkable and diverse group of women from all over the Philippines. This event was dedicated to honoring the resilience, sisterhood, and limitless possibilities of women.
Yet, on the evening of my PGH visit, I encountered a significant personal hurdle. I had a severe hypoglycemic episode that almost prevented me from speaking at the church.
In my hour of frailty, the Lord’s strength manifested. He restored me when I needed Him most. By the morning of Dec. 7, a renewed vigor began to course through me, a divine signal to persevere. This divine intervention revitalized my spirit, allowing me to honor my obligations. I couldn’t let a bout of low blood sugar deter me from fulfilling His purpose and spreading His word. Assured that in His sanctuary, I would find the safest haven, my prayers were answered and I started feeling better.
This situation vividly brought to life the enduring wisdom of Proverbs 31:30, a verse that has long been a foundation for me. It states, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” This passage informs us that true strength and meaning are not found outward but in a life anchored by faith. Ultimately, everything worked out, reinforcing the power of faith and the importance of persevering through challenges.
Experiences like these are rare and transformative, compelling us to lead with compassion, overcome adversity, and uplift one another with kindness. Notably, this season mirrors the values of Sec. Mina, from her unwavering empathy to resilience, and commitment to service.
Finally, I hope the holiday spirit inspires us to celebrate with an open heart and that the joy of giving brings us closer to those around us.
Here’s to a season filled with warmth, love, and the continued blessing of community and faith. Happy holidays to all!
There is hope!
