Extreme caution: Muntinlupa's heat index soars to 40°C

The heat index in Muntinlupa reached 40 degree Celsius on May 5 that is equivalent to a warning of extreme caution.  According to the Muntinlupa City Department of Disaster Resilience and Management (MCDDRM), the 40 degree Celsius heat index was recorded at 1 p.m. based on an air temperature of 33 degree Celsius and 60 percent relative humidity.  The heat index in Muntinlupa on May 5 (Photo from MCDDRM)
Under the effect-based classification of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), 33 to 41 degree Celsius is “extreme caution” that can lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion.  “Continuing activity could lead to heat stroke,” it warned.  Heat index “is a measure of the contribution that high humidity makes with abnormally high temperatures in reducing the body's ability to cool itself,” according to PAGASA.  PAGASA advised the  following procedures when a person suffers from heat-related issues:  \- Move the person to a shaded spot and lay him down with legs elevated\. If conscious\, have them sip cool water\.  \- Remove clothing\, apply cool water to the skin and provide ventilation\, \- Apply ice packs to the armpits\, wrists\, ankles\, and groin \- Bring to a hospital immediately
