The outspoken Guazon voiced out her suspicion, along with her great displeasure, in a tweet Thursday, Jan. 12.

"Eggs naman ang short supply. P ng ama ng mga cartel, papatayin talaga nila ang mga Pilipino. May kasabwat sila sa gobyerno (Now eggs are in short supply. these cartels, they will really kill Filipinos. They are in cahoots with the government)," she wrote.

Filipino consumers are still reeling from the runaway prices of onion, which is among the most commonly used vegetables in cooking. Eggs are arguably just as ubiquitous in the kitchen.

Local new sites have reported about the increase in the prices of eggs, which now cost P9 to P10 apiece. It retailed for just below P7 last December.

The reason cited for the price jump was the episode of bird flu in Central Luzon, which resulted to the supply shortage.

Guanzon is a former Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner.
