Magnitude 5.0 quake hits Surigao del Sur — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 5.0-magnitude earthquake offshore of Surigao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 27.

Phivolcs said the earthquake struck 35 kilometers northeast of Cortes, Surigao del Sur at 12:43 p.m.

It was initially measured as a magnitude 5.2 quake but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 5.0.

Its instruments recorded the tremor at Intensity II in Tandag, Surigao del Sur and Intensity I in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte.

The earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
