Rey Remogat’s career-high 24 points helped University of the East slip past De La Salle in overtime, 80-72, to end its campaign on a positive note in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Remogat scored 20 points in the second half to provide the winning boost for the Red Warriors who swept the Green Archers in the two-round elimination this season.

Taking the lessons from their 69-66 overtime loss to Ateneo this week, UE managed to pull off a repeat over La Salle in the extra period after showing endgame composure to wrap up the tournament with a 5-9 record in the standings.

With 8:16 left in the fourth quarter, Remogat fired the game-tying triple after being down by as many as 12 points in the first half.

Gani Stevens’ layup off a fastbreak gave UE the lead for the first time in the contest with 7:51 remaining before Remogat knocked another three-pointer to extend the lead by five.

In the last two minutes, Mark Nonoy finally came to his senses with his own back-to-back shot from beyond the arc to snatch the lead back for La Salle, 68-64.

But Remogat’s pull-up jumper and Kyle Paranada’s layup enabled UE to force the extension.

Down by four in the extra period, the Red Warriors went on an 8-0 run after the Archers’ quick four-point rally capped by Remogat’s three-pointer which was already enough reason for the Green Archers to yield.

“Well, I cannot say a special word especially for this guy beside me. Being a coach ito ‘yong pinakamasarap alam mo na sinunod ‘yong instruction. We had a good practice yesterday light lang. I told the guys even though were out of the contest already. Isa lang sinabi ko sa mga bata nag-request ako kung pwede ba nila iregalo sa akin tong last game. Nag-commit sila sa akin yesterday,” said UE head coach Jack Santiago.

For La Salle’s part, Nonoy had 14 points apart from six rebounds and four assists while Bright Nwankwo and CJ Austria added 10 points apiece as it absorbed a 6-7 record after three straight wins.
