(PHIVOLCS)

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Ilocos Sur on Thursday morning, Nov. 24, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake struck 1 kilometer southeast of Sinait, Ilocos Sur at 4:46 a.m. on Thursday.

It said the earthquake was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Sinait, Vigan City, Caoayan, San Juan, Santo Domingo, San Vicente, Santiago, Lidlida, Caoayan, Banayoyo, and Magsingal in Ilocos Sur, Batac City in Ilocos Norte, and Lagangilang in Abra.

It was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Bantay, Ilocos Sur

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the tremor at Intensity III in Bangued, Abra and Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; Intensity II in Peñablanca, Cagayan and Pasuquin, Laoag City, Batac in Ilocos Norte; and Intensity I in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur.

The earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, Phivolcs said it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
