San Mateo, Rizal LGU urges residents to make ‘parols’ out of recycled materials

Residents of San Mateo, Rizal are being encouraged to use recyclable materials in making their "parol" or Christmas lanterns.

The office of Mayor Bartolome Rivera, through the San Mateo Public Information Office (PIO), announced in its social media page that residents are being enjoined to make their own lanterns by using recyclable materials such as PET bottles of local beverages or softdrinks, and other materials that are garbage to others but are usable and can be recycled.

The PIO said the Christmas lantern-making by communities in San Mateo is the town’s participation in the provincial capitol’s contest for local government units in Rizal to make a giant Christmas Tree out of recyclable materials.

The office of Mayor Rivera also said that the lanterns which the residents will make will be incorporated in the lighting ceremony for the town government’s entry to the giant Christmas Tree contest to be held in Plaza Natividad in San Mateo on Nov. 22.

The lanterns made of recyclable bottles and other materials will symbolize the San Mateo residents’ pro-environment initiatives and their unity in welcoming Christmas Day in a positive way despite the ongoing pandemic.
