The PCG identified the rescued victim as James Rafael Asierto, a resident of Quiapo, Manila.

According to the PCG, the personnel of the BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-9702) anchored at the Port Area from a relief mission in Iloilo City when Coast Guard Seaman Second Class (SN2) Casey Ralph Badajos heard cries for help from the victim around 2 p.m.

The victim was estimated to be 400 meters from the ship and found to be clinging to a styrofoam box and plastic bottle to keep himself afloat.

The PCG personnel immediately deployed a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) to save the victim.

“Ayon sa salaysay ng bata, tinangay siya ng malakas na agos habang lumalangoy sa Manila Bay (According to the testimony of the boy, he was swept away by the strong current while swimming in the Manila Bay),” the PCG said.

Meanwhile, the PCG advised parents and children to be vigilant when swimming in the Manila Bay.

The victim was treated with first aid by PCG personnel after he sustained a graze in his left foot. He was turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and eventually brought home.
