Nesthy Petecio, Hergie Bacyadan bag bronze medals in ASBC tilt


Nesthy Petecio and Hergie Bacyadan yielded to separate opponents to go home with bronze medals apiece in the 2022 ASBC Asian Elite Men & Women Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Petecio bowed to Karina Ibragimova, 5-0, in the women’s 57kg featherweight division after judges from Italy, Thailand, Algeria, Tajikistan and Tunisia scored identical 30-26 in favor of the Kazakh fighter.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist earned an opening round bye and prevailed over Thailand’s Nilawan Techausuep in the quarterfinals before losing to Ibragimova.

Bacaydan, meanwhile, suffered a close 3-2 loss to Uzbekistan’s Ruzmetova Sokhiba in the women’s 75kg middleweight class. She scored 29-28 to judges from India and Chinese Taipei, and 28-29 to judges from Italy, Tunisia and Morocco.

Carlo Paalam remains the lone Filipino standing in the tournament as he currently battles Seidekmatov Sanzhai of Kyrgyzstan in the men’s 54kg bantamweight semifinal.

Paalam is coming off victories over Muhanov Dovlet of Turkmenistan and Joosung Yoon of South Korea.
