The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Tuesday, Oct. 4, started its own investigation into the killing of broadcaster Percival Mabasa, popularly known as “Percy Lapid” in his “Lapid Fire” radio program over DWBL 1242.

Mabasa was killed by unidentified gunmen last Oct. 3 in Las Pinas City.

The CHR noted that Mabasa had previously aired critical views against key personalities and policies under the immediately past and current administrations.

"CHR stands with the media community in denouncing this violent crime and violation of the right to life," the CHR statement said.

"Any threat or attack on press freedom is a direct threat to people’s right to truth and information,” it stressed.

It pointed out that “one episode of media killing is already far too many, and it is disheartening because journalists are essential in upholding democracy and demanding accountability in any society.”

Thus, the CHR reiterated the "crucial need" for the government to ensure a safe and unimpaired environment for those working in the media, stressing that journalists must be able to work without fear in order to foster balance in communicating the nation’s state of affairs.

"As such, we urge the government, particularly our law enforcement officers, to bring the perpetrators to account. We also call on the public to advocate for the importance of journalism in maintaining peace, cultivating unity, and advocating justice for all," it CHR said.

It extended its condolences to the victim’s families and loved ones.
