Majority of Ormoc City residents agreed to merge 28 barangays into three and rename one barangay during a plebiscite held on Saturday, Oct. 8, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said.

“With a clear collective vote of 89.34 percent for YES and just 10.08 percent for No, thousands of Ormocanons resoundingly voted to Ratify Ormoc City Ordinance No. 052,” said Comelec Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco in a statement on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The barangays in Ormoc City will now be identified as South, West, East, and North. The barangays that will be merged and renamed are:

  • Barangay South: Barangay District Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 15, 17, 23 and 27
  • Barangay East: Barangay District Nos. 9, 10, 11, 16, 18, 25 and 28
  • Barangay West: Barangay District Nos. 14, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24 and 26
  • Barangay North: renamed from Barangay District No. 29

Laudiangco said that “53 percent of the more than 10,000 residents of the 29 Barangays in Ormoc City” participated in the plebiscite.

“With this reverberating decision, the City Government of Ormoc hopes and intends to bring Barangay Governance more efficiently and effectively to the people, ensure the delivery of basic services and usher the whole of government closer to the Ormocanons,” said Laudiangco.

The poll body said that the Ormoc City plebiscite was the fourth in a series of plebiscites held this year.

“The Commission on Elections, together with all Filipinos here in our beloved country and wherever so dispersed, hope to pursue these democratic achievements in the coming plebiscites, Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections, and the succeeding National and Local Elections,” said Laudiangco.
