Laborer nabbed for killing high school teacher in Masbate


LEGAZPI CITY (PNA) – Police arrested a 30-year-old construction worker on Wednesday, Oct. 5, for allegedly killing a private high school teacher in Claveria, Masbate on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Police identified the suspect as Alvin Yanzon.

Initial investigation showed that the victim, Jessabel Mangubat, 24, of Barangay Manapao, Claveria, Masbate, a private high school teacher of San Ramon Institute in Claveria, was found lifeless in her apartment.

Lt. Col. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, Police Regional Office in Bicol spokesperson, said the suspect was identified by a witness of the crime.

The Masbate Police Provincial Office said around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a concerned citizen reported to the Claveria police that a body was found in an apartment.

"Authorities during the hot-pursuit operation recovered in the possession of the suspect a T-shirt with blood stains and a 14-inch wooden ax handle," Calubaquib said.

Calubaquib added that the victim sustained a head wound from a hard object that caused her death.

Additional information said the incident happened on Tuesday and was only discovered on Wednesday.

The suspect was also believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

"Yanzon is a helper of the apartment that was being rented by the victim. While the owner of the apartment went to Masbate City, the suspect got the chance to go inside the room of the victim," Calubaquib said.

Brig. Gen. Rudolph Dimas, PRO-5 director, in a statement, extended his sympathy to the bereaved family and promised immediate justice for the victim.

“The suspect is now under the custody of Claveria Police Station while preparing for the case to be filed. What he has done is unacceptable and he needs to be prosecuted for what he has done to the victim," Dimas said.

Suspect is detained at the Claveria police station.
