Dignity in frayed hems, loose threads, and faded colors

Marina Cruz headlines Pintô exhibition of heirloom inabel fabrics

HORIZON, oil on canvas, 48 "x64 "

Opening on Oct. 9, Sunday, at Ilustrado at Gallery 7 of Pintô Art Museum is “Heir to the Loom,”the latest solo show of Marina Cruz. Occupying the largest exhibiting space at Pintô, the works present the artist’s meticulous depiction of heirloom inabel fabrics, revealing their weft and woof up close with a studied curiosity. Overlapping, creased, and folded together, the various textiles have been worn at some point and now bear the marks of use with evidence of frayed hems, loose threads, and color fading.

Yet, through the figurative fidelity of Cruz, the dignity of these textiles shines through—their quality of being handmade and treasured, passed as precious objects from one generation to the next. Through this exhibition, Cruz provides a fresh tangent on how our material culture and tangible heritage may be appreciated and honored, particularly the hardy Iloko fabric and its durable beauty.
