PDEA files charges vs barangay official in Cebu arrested for shabu

CEBU CITY – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) filed three administrative charges on Wednesday, Sept. 28, against a councilor of Barangay Mainit in Naga City, Cebu who was arrested after packs of suspected shabu were seized in his house during a raid last month.

Charged by the PDEA-Central Visayas (PDEA 7) before the Office of the Ombudsman for the Visayas was Renante Chiong, who yielded 12 packs of shabu weighing 0.3620 grams and drug paraphernalia after a search warrant was served on Aug. 23 in his house in Barangay Mainit.

Leia Alcantara, information officer of PDEA 7, said Chiong was charged for violation of Republic Act No. 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, grave misconduct pursuant to Section 50, Rule 10 of the 2017 Rules on Administrative Cases in Civil Service, and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of service pursuant to Section 46, Chapter 7 of the Revised Administrative Code of 1987 on the Civil Service Commission.

PDEA 7 Director Levi Ortiz said they are taking the initiative to file the charges against Chiong to show seriousness in its illegal drug campaign.

“Anyone can file administrative cases against erring public officials. But as part of our commitment to effectively implement the anti-illegal drug campaign in the region, we have taken the initiative to file the necessary administrative charges against the suspect to hold him accountable as he is an elected official who should have set a good example for his constituents,” Ortiz said.
