2 more deaths recorded due to ‘Karding'; toll now at 10 – NDRRMC


Two more persons died due to Super Typhoon “Karding” which brought the running tally to 10, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Wednesday, Sept. 28.

NDRRMC spokesperson Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said a 29-year-old man drowned in Brgy. Poblacion, Baliwag, Bulacan while another fatality due to drowning was also noted in Tanay, Rizal.

Meanwhile, five others were added to the list of missing persons due to Karding, bringing the total count to eight.

In Mercedes, Camarines Norte, two more fishermen were reported missing at the height of the typhoon. There are now five missing fishermen in Mercedes.

Two individuals were also reported missing in Antipolo, Rizal and one in Patnanungan, Quezon.

“Sana manatili na lang na ganito at tinutugunan naman natin ang pangangailangan ng mga pamilya nila (We hope that the situation remains as is and we are responding to the needs of the victims’ families),” Alejandro said.

Affected

Meanwhile, the number of typhoon-affected Filipinos has ballooned to 157,023 individuals or 39,893 families.

There were 37,135 individuals or 8,825 families still staying in 574 evacuation centers in the affected regions in Region 1, Region 2, Region 3, Calabarzon (Region 4A), Mimaropa (Region 4B), Region 5, and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

A total of 81 areas were deemed flooded across Northern, Central and Southern Luzon. As of Wednesday, flood in 18 areas already subsided which means that there were 63 areas still submerged in floodwaters.

Agri, infra damage

Damage to agriculture also shot up to P1.291 billion, with 82,158 farmers affected by flooding and damaged crops.

“Sa agriculture, ito po ang medyo malaki. Nasa P1.291 billion na po ang worth of damage to agriculture, ito ang reported sa atin ng DA (In agriculture, the damage is slightly big. A total of P1.291 billion worth of damage to agriculture was reported by the DA to us),” Alejandro said.

“That covers rice na 138,000 hectares ang apektado and ‘yung corn, and other high-value crops (It covers 138,000 hectares of rice that were affected as well as corn and other high-value crops),” he added.

Damage to infrastructure amounted to P23 million which covered Region 1, Mimaropa, and Cordillera Administrative Region.
